What to expect

You think fast. You get a lot done. It is who you are.

But there are days the sharpness is just not there. The thinking slows. The good ideas do not come as easily. You push through, and the work gets done, but you know it was not your best.

Transcendental Meditation (TM) sharpens your focus and helps you reach ideas that lie beyond your logical thinking. Twice a day, twenty minutes, you sit with your eyes closed and your mind gets quiet on its own. Your body gets a rest deeper than sleep. You come out clear, fast, and steady again.

This retreat is four nights at MERU to learn the technique properly, with a teacher, in a place where you can switch off completely because everything else is looked after.

Before the retreat, you have a one-to-one conversation with your teacher, online. They get to know you and what you want from the practice, so from your first day here the teaching is shaped around you.

By the last day, meditation is no longer something you are learning. It is just something you do. And the biggest difference is not the days here, but how your week feels once you are back in it.

New to Transcendental Meditation®?

Transcendental Meditation is a simple technique. You practise it sitting comfortably with your eyes closed, twenty minutes twice a day. It is not like most other kinds of meditation: there is no concentrating, no clearing your mind, no trying to stay in the present. The mind settles down on its own, into a deep rest, while you stay awake and clear.

It is easy to learn, and it works for complete beginners. Millions of people of every age and background have learned it. If you can think, you can do it.

What are the benefits?

Transcendental Meditation is the most researched meditation technique there is, with hundreds of published studies. People who practise it regularly often notice:

  • Sharper focus and clearer thinking
  • More creative ideas, arriving on their own
  • Less stress, and more steadiness under pressure
  • Better sleep
  • Deep rest in a short time, of a kind ordinary sleep does not give

The research is strong. Studies show lower cortisol, the main stress hormone, along with less anxiety, better sleep, and support for heart health. Transcendental Meditation is the only meditation technique named in American Heart Association guidelines for lowering blood pressure. These are general patterns across many people, and what any one person notices can vary.

For whom is this retreat?

This retreat is for you if:

  • You think fast and get a lot done, and you want to keep it that way
  • Some days your mind is sharp and some days it is not, and you want more of the sharp ones
  • You have tried better habits, and the tiredness underneath is still there
  • You want to keep performing at a high level for years, not push until it catches up with you
  • You would rather learn the technique properly, from a teacher, than piece it together yourself

You do not need any experience. Only an interest in learning.

What is included?
  • A one-to-one conversation with your teacher before the retreat, then personal instruction in Transcendental Meditation and follow-up sessions throughout, so you leave able to do it correctly on your own
  • Extra talks and sessions on sharper thinking, deeper rest, and fitting the practice into a busy week
  • Group meditations, and time in nature at MERU and the surrounding Meinweg National Park
  • Gentle Yoga exercises and breathing techniques
  • Four nights at MERU, in calm rooms designed for deep rest
  • Freshly prepared organic vegetarian meals
  • Check-ins with your teacher at 10 and 20 days after the retreat, and the official TM app
What to bring?

Please bring comfortable clothing for meditation and for Yoga practice. Also:

  • Clothes for summer weather, and a layer for cooler evenings
  • Comfortable shoes for walks in nature
  • Any personal items and medication you need
  • A European travel adaptor if you need one
  • A valid ID
  • A notebook, if you like to take notes

What past participants say

Emmerich, participant of the Winter assembly's headshot

I felt waves of bubbling bliss arising from within myself when I was seated in Maharishi’s house. I feel a shield of invincibility surrounding myself since I’m back home. No amount of criticism can distract me from that bliss and calm that I feel on the inside.

The new building is beautiful, also the room was a pleasure to be in. A warm welcome upon arriving. Everything was perfect. The course, the accommodation, the food, the friendliness. I really felt at home at MERU and felt a little sad to leave.

There is such a deep silence here that you feel truly nourished and rested, in a way that goes far beyond ordinary sleep. I felt a deeper level of rest and healing than I’ve experienced anywhere else.

I stayed in Room 10 and found the sound isolation within the room to be excellent. The new building is very comfortable, and the underfloor heating kept me perfectly warm throughout my stay.

Very soft, pure atmosphere in the building. And high level comfort. Impressive organising effort from the whole team. Big Thank You to All.

Excellent and truly refreshing on all counts. The course was so well organised and so rich in content. The new Vastu building was ideal. The food was fabulous. The staff were so helpful. Every minute of being at MERU was evolutionary and uplifting.
